Despite all the promises, commercial shipbuilding never really took off in India
8As of today, there is no new commercial shipbuilding order by the country's largest ship owner, the Shipping Corporation of India
8Whenever a demand arises, to meet the challenging commercial charter rates prevailing in the market, ship owners are more focused on second-hand ships which are readily available at very competitive prices.
8In addition to the international depressed market conditions, the difficulty to raise the fund from banks for new acquisition and the imposition of GST on the income of ship owners have dampened the interest to increase the Indian fleet.

Divers working in India's coastal waters need to be extra careful.
8Indian coastal waters are getting more polluted, according the latest reports.
8Of the 24 coastal locations where waters are monitored, at least 11 have "poor" quality water.
8The sea water was found to be infested with Escherichia coli and Streptococcus bacteria
8Note needs to be taken by E&P companies working in India's coastal waters. The water further out in the sea is less polluted however.

For a number of years, multinationals have been using India as a hub for low-cost talent.
8However, in the past few years, India has also been recognized for high-quality managerial talent. Indians are starting to occupy major positions across industries such as consumer

8Moreover, many such companies are also leveraging local talent for driving innovation through R&D centers.
8In the case of a leading global conglomerate, more than a quarter of their innovations are done by the team in India.

After a court order allowed the L&T-Mcdermott consortium to enter the fray for the offshore process platform for the KG-DWN-98/2 discovery, ONGC is trying very hard to keep the competition alive by giving one of the competitors an unprecedented third clarification round in what has so far been a messy three-horse race.
8The third bidder is a wobbly consortium, led by an aggressive Hyderabad-based EPC player and includes a Turkish EPC company
8But ONGC believes that a third round of clarification, now submitted by the consortium, can add more spice to the tendering process.
8Tender provisions only allow two round of clarifications.
8But was that done under pressure?

One doomsday scenario points at oil prices going well beyond the $100/bbl mark by 2020.
8This pessimistic projection is, however, based on some interesting data centered around the mandatory 2020 deadline for introduction of low sulphur fuels in the shipping industry, not revealed before, that the oil & gas industry must take a look at

Oil field equipment prices, particularly offshore equipment prices, have begun their upward climb.
8Equipment purchasers such as ONGC and OIL are figuring that out as bidders are now refusing to extend validity dates for their price bids on the ground that prices have gone up in the interim period.

8Only marine spreads, such as rigs and OSVs, the rates are likely to stay low for some more time because of a massive supply backlog.

Setting up Build Own and Operate (BOO) industrial air production facilities attached to refineries can seem to be a safe business
8But is it?
8In Paradeep refinery, a BOO arrangement took years to sort out the snags as the air supply facility come up earlier than the refinery itself and fixed costs plus returns had to be paid by IOC for several months without taking any inputs.
8A similar BOO model to supply hydrogen gas to a big refinery expansion was commissioned this year
8But high feedstock prices and the lag in passing over energy charges to the refinery owner has dragged down the multinational's profits by quite a few basis points
8The BOO model is safe but not foolproof

The world is now more bullish about the future of oil than it was for a few years now
8Fresh research seems to show that the advent of electric cars will not dent demand for crude to the extent it was thought off earlier
8It is also important to revisit the timing of battery costs falling to levels that compete with internal combustion engines and how issues surrounding the battery supply chain (e.g., availability of lithium and cobalt) will affect cost, the argument goes on the stress
8In addition, the slow pace at which new mines are opening could slow the rate of battery production and EV penetration.
8The conclusion is that it would take decades and significant policy drivers for the world to transition away from oil.
