Adopting to rapid technological change seems to be the big new challenge for oil & gas companies. 8Today, for example, well construction and intervention tasks -- which make up typically 40% and sometimes as much as 70% of all costs -- that require months to complete might soon be possible in mere days or weeks. 8At a time of unprecedented technological advancements, the physical capacities and cognitive abilities of the oil and gas industry are leaping by greater bounds every year. 8For example, a number of drilling advancements at both the rig and downhole levels have helped producers reach targets previously impossible to consider. 8In this context, will ONGC be able to cope with the challenge? Click on Reports for more

There is also the fear among E&P companies of being left out of this big technological revolution. There is also the apprehension that if they do not embrace the revolution, their cost matrices may not measure up to hose of their more agile peers. 8Keeping this in mind, ONGC has decided to test out a model digitalization programme in Mumbai High 8A select set of well head platforms for optimization of gas lift wells and gas injection volume, thereby pushing up operational efficiencies. 8"We will use the best technology that is available," a top ONGC official told this website. 8It seems ONGC is willing to try out everything: from advanced analytics to improve drilling operations to harnessing previously unconnected or manualized pattern spotting by using monitors to anticipating unexpected downhole events, improving well placements, and foreseegi equipment failures. 8For ONGC, this is the first tentative step forward into the bold new digital world. The really big challenge for ONGC will be to bring about the organization change need to work in a digital environment 8The next generation operating model will require the building of cross-functional teams 8More centralized yet agile ways of doing work will have to be pushed through 8Eventually, robotic process automation can take on 80 percent, or even more, of the tasks executed today. 8More importantly, ONGC will have to work with a new workforce as current labor-intensive tasks get automated 8The company will have to build capacities in areas such as agile coaching, data science, and advanced-tech stack planning. 8Changing interfaces with suppliers will require evolved tasks and profiles. 8These changes are expected to affect all groups inside ONGC and are likely to progress quickly, possibly within the next few years. 8It is only when new capabilities are developed, will ONGC be able to deliver more ambitious targets. 8The moot point is whether ONGC is capable of such quick and dramatic change Click on Reports for more

Is there really a need for back-to-back gas purchase agreements to get funding for an LNG project at a time when shortages are expected to be looming ahead? 8The Mozambique project -- in which the Indian trio of ONGC, OIL and BPCL are heavily invested -- has been struggling to get funding as the partners try to piece together an adequate number of gas supply deals 8But there are other LNG projects which are racing ahead without such agreements in place, instead of betting on a market that will see a demand-supply gap "sooner than later". With firm indications that global warming is now knocking on our doors, there are pilot plants sprouting around all over the world testing out the use of renewable power to gas alternatives. 8But the fact remains that the cost of all power-to-gas alternatives remains higher than the cost of fossil-derived natural gas even with the addition of an assumed €100/t CO2 carbon price. 8Even biomethane is more expensive and there is the additional problem of lack of adequate feedstock. 8The technology is now available for power-to-gas production 8But the point to note is that it will have to be the decarbonisation of the energy system that has to be the primary driver to pursue P2G (or indeed biomethane) objective. 8The entire effort will have to be driven by government policy rather than commercial economics. OMCs are now being forced to take a hit of Rs 1/ litre by the government. 8The absorption could lower EBITDA by as much as 25% 8So far, there has been no word on compensation of under-recoveries on LPG and kerosene. There is a possibility of OMCs, upstream and government bearing a part of the burden. 8The mere return to subsidy regime increases the working capital requirement of the OMCs. 8The government could well be reverting to issuing oil bonds instead of compensating in cash. This may increase the interest cost substantially. 8This is also bad news for both Rosneft controlled Essar Refinery and RIL: a situation may come when they, unable to absorb the under-recovery, may have to shut their retail outlets Click on Reports for more
