If offshore wind projects pick up speed in India, as it has done in China and in Europe, the indigenous offshore oil & gas industry will stand to gain a lot.
8Other than just service providers who stand to gain, some oil & gas companies are also picking up offshore wind projects.
8Service providers for oil and gas platforms arealso  increasingly orienting themselves to offshore wind farms (heavy-lift vessels, crewboats, pipe-laying vessels, survey vessels).
8 Some like Saipem, an Italian oil and gas industry contractor (drilling services; engineering, procurement and construction (EPC); installation) has branched out into offshore wind
installation and EPC services, as well as the fabrication of jacket components for foundations.
8Shipyards also benefit. Offshore wind farms require large, specialised vessels, and existing oil and gas ships may require extensive conversions for the new tasks.

India has a robust offshore oil & gas business.
8These existing oil and gas assets can be leveraged in support of offshore wind, given the significant synergies that exist in hardware and skills.
8The basic design of the foundations and substations for offshore wind turbines is essentially the same as for oil and gas platforms.
8Specific policy measures, such as upgrading and supplier development programmes, support for joint ventures, and industrial promotion schemes, may be needed to strengthen the industrial capacity of domestic Indian firms.
8This is the time to step in and think strategically.
8This is one business where the domestic content can be much higher than in the offshore E&P business

There is huge volatility in the consumption of petroleum products in India.
8The vide month-on-month variations are not susceptible to ordinary interpretations.
8They do reflect movements on the ground but the PPAC's explanations are obviously too simplistic to be taken seriously.
8While a 19% jump in bitumen consumption in August is understandable why was there a 54% increase in July when monsoons were active? There was a 19% fall in petcoke consumption last month and while that can be because of court action, how do you explain an 8.5% rise in FO/LSHS consumption, and a 1% rise in naphtha offtake but a 25% jump in LDO consumption
8On this background, diesel and petrol consumption trends are more logical perhaps.
8There is too much volatility on industrial fuel consumption, thereby pointing towards uncertain conditions brought about by a host of factors, triggered no doubt by the devaluation of rupee and supplemented by general uncertainty on the industrial front.

ONGC's mega Jackup rig tender is expected to come out in the first week of October.
8The earlier anticipation that the rig requirement will be in double digits has been trimmed.
8Even so, the tender will still be the largest such tender for jackups globally when it comes out
Click on Details for more. Details
There was a lot of anticipation that the current tender will see ONGC replacing the existing lot of low quality jackup rigs with new generation of jackup rigs with higher efficiency parameters.
8ONGC boasts of eliciting the lowest day rate in the world for Jackup rigs but that is more due the emphasis in its Bid Evaluation Criteria on eliciting a lower day rate than on an insistence on higher efficiency and better technology.
8The company is introducing a Quality and Cost Based Selection selection criteria now but it has arranged the parameters in such a manner that the old and fully depreciated rigs will continue to be have a cost advantage.

Why is it that China can afford much higher prices for LNG than India?
8Why is it import prices significantly above $5 per million British thermal units (mmbtu), Indian LNG will continue to disappoint?
8In comparison, Chinese affordability levels are much higher.
8The problem seems to be with how the Indian market is structured
8In the power sector, for example, which has the largest potential to absorb incremental LNG supplies, the record low solar tariffs (e.g. a 2017 auction yielded $0.038/kilowatt-hour) exclude the costs of intermittency, thereby raising questions over whether developers have adequately priced in risk and whether these projects will be completed on schedule. This opens up a potential balancing or bridging role for gas in the power sector, which will only become clearer as renewable project deadlines begin to kick in.
8Like in the power sector, there are several other industrial segments, where real demand for gas is still to be ascertained.
8For India to raise its LNG import volumes significantly, the roadmap is clear but no one seems to be willing to take the bull by its horns

The problem with the Indian gas lobby is that it has failed to impress policy makers
8The conversations or presentations are airy but lack substance
8There is a is a distinct lack of convincing work on price elasticity of gas demand from gas analysts, whether from academia, consultancy, or industry.
8So it is difficult to say beyond a cursory look at empirical evidence to arrive at a figure of $5-6/mmbtu as the affordable price of gas in India, at which significantly higher volumes of gas can be pushed into the market.
8For now a combination of poorly targeted price reform, relatively low affordability, infrastructure constraints, and competing renewables targets makes it difficult to be optimistic about short to medium-term gas market potential in India, particularly if it needs to be driven by LNG imports.

In an interesting insight, it is claimed that both solar and wind energy are reaching their physical limits when it comes to extracting more efficiencies either from a solar cell or a wind mill.
8That the laws of diminishing returns are going to set in soon, when efficiency increases will slow down.
8The physics of using silicon to convert photons into electrons ends at about a 33% conversion (called the Shockley-Queisser Limit.). The most recent announcements of high-efficiency silicon cells with 26% efficiency are approaching the limit. Again, more efficiency is possible, but there are no 10-fold gains left. Then again, The physics limit for a wind turbine, called the Betz Limit, permits capturing about 60% of the kinetic energy in moving air. (Physics dictates that one can never capture 100% of any potential energy.) Modern turbines already exceed 40% capture. That leaves gains to be made, but nothing revolutionary.
8On the other hand, particularly for shale gas, there is still a large efficiency gap to bridge. The underlying geophysics points to a roughly 500% gap between what today’s shale tech can extract and what nature ultimately permits.
8At today’s costs, $1 million invested in a modern wind turbine will produce, over 30 years of operation, about 50 million kWh. And $1 million spent on utility-grade solar panels will produce about 25 million kWh over 30 years.
8Meanwhile, $1 million spent on a shale rig in the US will produce enough natural gas to generate 400 million kWh over the same 30 years.

Comment: Did RIL made a mistake selling its sale gas assets in the US? This is a debate we will undertake next time around. Just when the prospects were looking attractive, why did the RIL brass decide to sell? These and series of wrong decisions taken by RIL's E&P division will be the highlight of our discussions going ahead. A new bunch of entrepreneurs has entered the oil & gas industry through the DSF-1 Round fields because they are chasing the dream of high returns on low investments.
8That's India's discovered fields have provided high returns to investors has been established. Discovery is an expensive process but once discovered, the cost of extraction is low.
8Aside from the DSF-1 stories, here is an example of an Indian entrepreneur, who, having burnt his hands in a range of businesses, has eventually found his pot of gold in an oil & gas field.
8The field has just gone into production.
8He plans to add more value by raising his reserves and drilling additional wells.

While India is making big strides in renewable energy, the Chinese have a bigger story to tell.
8Wind market: China installed 40 percent of global wind capacity in 2015. In 2016, China installed nearly three times as much wind power as the United States. China owns five
of the world’s ten largest wind-turbine manufacturers. The country installed 18 off-shore wind projects in 2017. Six of those projects counted among the 20 largest wind deals worldwide.
8Solar market: China accounted for 60 percent of global solar cell production in 2017. China owns five of the world’s six largest solar manufacturing companies, and those companies have acquired a number of their international competitors in recent years. China installed at least 50 GW of new solar capacity in 2017, compared with the United States’s addition of 10.6 GW solar capacity.
8China also recently surpassed the United States as the largest market for electric vehicles.

Going hybrid is the new buzzword.
8Combine solar or wind with diesel, or with battery storage or with grid power, and you can get a hybrid model going.
8But a new low cost model is in offing: combining renewable with nuclear power.
8The excess heat can be stored within a reactor and released when required, or when renewable generation is low.
8And this model is also supposedly cost-effective
