Now that a move is on to allow anyone with Rs 250 crore to set up an outlet for retail fuels, there seems to be a backlash building up from existing players -- both public and private -- who have spent time and money to build up their networks.
8There are now reports that the massive expansion spree by public sector oil marketing companies is already bringing down throughout per pump to unviable levels.
8And if non-oil players are allowed to set up shop, the situation can go from bad to worse, the argument runs.
8Will this stand by existing players stymie the move to liberalize the sector, as the petroleum ministry begins the exercise of moving a cabinet note?
8Meanwhile, while private and public sector companies have misgivings about the liberalization of the retail sector, they will be at loggerheads when it comes to the liberalization of LPG marketing, for which an expert committee has now been appointed.

Who gets to set up LNG dispensing stations, a much-needed accouterment for the quick spread of LNG-based long term transportation needs, in India?
8That question seems to have gone answered as of now, but if the PNGRB decides to restrict ownership as seems to be the current view, it will serve as a big blow to India's aspiration to promote this less polluting and highly efficient fuel for long haul vehicles.

The global LNG business is growing but the biggest challenge it faces is that of affordability and this can stymie or even kill the effort to make gas the interim fuel before a full transition to renewable energy takes place.
