Recent announcements that manufacturers will soon sell autonomous cars raise hopes that self-driving vehicles will soon be widely available and solve many transportation problems. 8Advocates predict that by 2030, such vehicles will be sufficiently convenient and affordable to displace most human-operated vehicles. 8But the transition is not going to be easy 8It is likely to be chaotic 8And while everyone believes the benefits will come in the 2020s, they will not for a long time to come. 8The projection of this analysis is that autonomous vehicles become common and affordable, probably on in the 2040s to 2060s, and some benefits may require prohibiting human-driven vehicles on certain roadways, which could take longer.
