Merging GAIL with another oil company: Government sheepish now?
Talks of hiving off GAIL either to IOC or to HPCL and GAIL together seems to have subsided for now. 8It seems the government likes it better if it is directly the owner of the gas company, which is building pipelines on its behalf, rather than controlling it as a subsidiary of another of its oil companies. 8There is no action either on splitting up the company. The GAIL brass, it seems, has been able to convinced the government that a weakened GAIL cannot do the government's bidding, 8The government now claims GAIL was carved out of ONGC, implying that there is no reason to merge it back with another entity.
