The "Antilia" Paradox is under scrutiny by economists and social anthropologists around the world
Nov 08: For many around the world, an illustrative case of contemporary Indian opulence is ‘Antilia’, the residence of RIL chairman Mukesh Ambani, in the heart of Mumbai. Its estimated to cost one billion US dollars, it has a floor space equivalent to two-thirds of the Palace of Versailles, and boasts a staff of several hundred for its upkeep.
8The residence is now the scrutiny of economist and social anthropologists around the world over the question of how in the midst of poverty and squalor and the lack of proper housing, a 27-story, 400,000 square feet single-family residence can be accounted for.
8Also in focus is the question of why India, notwithstanding its multiple institutional challenges with a large impoverished agrarian population, is also able to generate a visible and globally mobile wealthy class.
8And how despite structural reforms, the country has failed to dismantle a vast and persistent low-wage informal sector, thereby accentuating the rise of the rich. By Aniruddha Sharma
