After Sterlite, will ONGC's Rs 2000 crore 110-welll drilling programme run into trouble?
May 25: Tamil Nadu was once a good place to do business. Not any more. Consistent flouting of environmental norms by industrial units and a corrupt state machinery have shaken the faith of the people in the capacity of the industrial machine to deliver employment and sustainable growth. The Sterlite episode bring all of this into sharp relief. GAIL had once tried its usual method of riding roughshod over local concerns while building a pipeline network by moving the state and central bureaucracy to act in a hurry. The move ended in failure, with pipeline laying delayed well beyond what was envisaged earlier.
Another flashpoint in Tamil Nadu now is the agitation over ONGC's plans for a Rs 2000 crore development drilling programme involving 110 wells in the Thanjavur District of Tamil Nadu. Crude leakages from pipelines in the area have made the locals skeptical of ONGC's handling of its oil and gas operations in the state. There is mounting opposition to the development drilling programme now.
The company however continues to insist that RFQs will indeed come out soon though they have been delayed for now. Find out more
